5 PRD Templates Every SaaS Team Needs

One Size Does Not Fit All

The biggest mistake product teams make with PRDs is using the same heavyweight template for everything. A 14-section Standard PRD makes sense for a major platform feature, but it's overkill for a small UI tweak.

Here are five templates that cover the full spectrum.

1. The Lean PRD (7 sections)

Best for: early-stage ideas, quick experiments, features with tight timelines.

Sections: Problem, Solution, Target Users, Key Features, Success Criteria, Scope & Constraints, Open Questions.

The Lean PRD forces you to answer "why are we building this?" before diving into "what are we building?" If you can't fill it out in 30 minutes, your idea might need more thinking — not more documentation.

2. The Standard PRD (14 sections)

Best for: core features, anything involving multiple teams, features with significant technical complexity.

This is the workhorse. It includes everything from user personas to rollback plans. Use it when the cost of getting requirements wrong is high.

3. The Feature Spec (9 sections)

Best for: enhancements to existing features, API additions, technical improvements.

The Feature Spec assumes context — your team already knows the product. It focuses on what's changing, why, and how to verify it works.

4. The One-Pager

Best for: executive alignment, budget requests, roadmap planning.

One page. Problem, proposed solution, expected impact, resource estimate. If your VP can't understand the feature after reading this, your PRD won't save it.

5. The Technical Design Doc

Best for: infrastructure changes, migrations, architecture decisions.

This isn't strictly a PRD, but product teams increasingly need it. It bridges the gap between "what" (PRD) and "how" (engineering spec).

Choosing the Right Template

Ask yourself: "How many people need to understand this, and how much could go wrong?"

• Cross-team, medium risk → Standard PRD
• Existing feature iteration → Feature Spec

• Architecture decision → Technical Design Doc
